Here’s everything you need to know to install a wall sconce like a pro.
What you'll need :
- Safety first : circuit breaker access
- Wall sconce fixture
- Screwdriver
- Wire stripper
- Voltage tester
- Electrical tape
- Mounting hardware (often included with your fixture)
- Drill (if needed for mounting)

Step 1 : Turn Off the Power
Before touching any wires, switch off the power at the breaker that controls the circuit you'll be working on. Use a voltage tester to confirm the power is off at the wall box.
Step 2 : Unpack and Prepare Your Fixture
Open the box and review the manufacturer's instructions. Remove any protective film and check that you have all the parts: mounting bracket, fixture, wire connectors, and screws.

Step 3 : Install the Mounting Bracket
- Attach the bracket to the electrical box in the wall using screws.
- Make sure it's level and secure.
- Feed the electrical wires (black, white and ground) through the center of the bracket.
Step 4 : Connect the Wires
- Black to black (hot)
- White to white (neutral)
- Ground wire to ground screw or green wire (usually bare copper)
Use wire connectors to join the wires, then wrap with electrical tape for safety.

Step 5 : Mount the Fixture
Once the wires are connected:
- Gently tuck them into the box.
- Align the sconce with the mounting bracket.
- Secure it using the screws provided.
Make sure the fixture is tight and straight.
Step 6 : Install the Bulb & Cover
Screw in the recommended light bulb and attach the fixture’s shade or cover. Double-check the maximum wattage allowed.

Step 7 : Restore Power & Test
Go back to the breaker and turn the power back on.
Flip the light switch, your new wall sconce should turn on!
Bonus Tips :
- Choose LED bulbs for energy efficiency.
- If installing beside a mirror, place the sconce at eye level (approx. 60-66")
- For double sconces, keep spacing balanced for symmetry.
