Installation guide : install an alcove bath in a few easy steps

We always recommend that you consult a professional if you are unfamiliar with the installation of plumbing and/or sanitary fixtures.

The following guidelines for the installation of an alçove bath assume that all old equipment has been disassembled and removed, and that all necessary repairs have been made.

First, here's what you'll need for installation:

Silicone sealant
Measuring tape
Pencil
Safety glasses
Pipe wrench
Level
Hacksaw
Drop cloth
1x4 boards
Thinset mortar
Construction adhesive
Wood shims

Step 1 : Positioning and Leveling

Place the bathtub in the designated opening and ensure that its rim is perfectly level in both directions. If necessary, adjust the base with shims.
Mark the final position of the underside of the rim by tracing a line onto the studs.

Step 2 : Installing the Support

Remove the bathtub and attach a 1x4 wooden support to the studs, aligning its top edge with the marked line. Never support the bathtub solely by its rim without using a support.

Step 3 : Drain Installation

Install the drainage system according to the manufacturer's instructions. This step requires a floor cutout.
Before replacing the bathtub for final installation, ensure a 6" x 12" opening is available to accommodate the 1½" drain and overflow kit. Note that this system extends below the bathtub.

Step 4 : Base Support Preparation

The bathtub must be fully supported along its bottom. Apply 1½" to 2" of mortar as a bedding material. Do not use sand or foam.

Step 5 : Bathtub Installation

Before the mortar sets, reposition the bathtub within its enclosure, ensuring its rim rests evenly on the supports and remains level.

Step 6 : Securing the Bathtub

Nail the flange along the top edge of the bathtub rim to the surrounding studs for a secure installation. Allow the mortar to dry for at least 8 hours before proceeding.
